Legally enforceable promise by a sponsor to financially support an intending immigrant.
Most family-based green card applicants need a sponsor to file Form I-864, promising to maintain the immigrant at 125% of the federal poverty guidelines. The obligation lasts until the immigrant naturalizes, earns 40 quarters of Social Security credits, or leaves the U.S. permanently.
