Social Security Number

A 9-digit number issued by SSA used for U.S. employment, taxes, and credit.

LPRs and most work-authorized noncitizens are eligible for SSNs. Many can request an SSN through their I-485 or USCIS account; otherwise they apply at an SSA office. Without an SSN, many noncitizens use an ITIN for tax filings.
