Definition
Sponsor
A person — usually a U.S. citizen or LPR — who agrees to financially support an immigrant.
In most family-based cases, the petitioner must serve as the sponsor on Form I-864 or, if their income is insufficient, recruit a joint sponsor. The sponsorship obligation can last for years or decades depending on the immigrant's subsequent history.
